After working with a number of companies just starting out with user guides, I've developed an easy-to-use Microsoft Word template. It's designed for some common user guide features, including a table of contents, table of figures, and index, and yet still be easy enough to use for someone without a technical writing background.

Why Train Customers?

Are your customers getting the most out of your product? How much time do you spend training a new customer? How many calls does your support staff or help desk receive? If you aren't satisfied with the answer to these questions, consider providing online training to your customers. Top companies already include online customer training as part of their strategies.*

In fact, Skilljar explains 3 stages of using training in your customer relationships in their The Guide to Customer Lifecyle Training. They are acquiring customers, onboarding customers, and retaining customers by providing support.

Training that generates leads who become paying customers has an obvious impact on the company's bottom line. Training for onboarding and supporting customers also has a measurable return on investment by trimming the time or cost for launching products and reducing dependence on help desks.

But also consider the possibility that training your customers can generate revenue for your company. If knowing your software adds a marketable skill for the customer, he or she is often willing to pay for learning that skill. The training could be a premium service offered with your software, or a separate purchase. You can find out if there is a market for help learning that skill by surveying your followers.

My mission is to help software companies take their businesses to the next level by offering customer-facing online training, not only for onboarding and supporting customers, but for lead and revenue generation.
